What to expect from a hairdressing or barbering apprenticeship

At The Terence Paul Academy, you won’t just be cutting hair on mannequins. You’ll be learning how to cut the latest, hottest styles, and how to set your own cutting trends in the future. And you’ll be doing this alongside industry experts on real models, and in real, working salons.

Starting at an NVQ Level 2 in hairdressing, just some of the important skills you’ll learn on a hairdressing apprenticeship include:

  • Shampooing & conditioning
  • Styling & dressing techniques
  • Reception duties
  • Client consultations
  • Cutting techniques
  • Mixing, applying and selecting colours

Your time will be spent between on-the-job learning in one of our partner salons,and practical training workshops in one of our academy locations. Even when you’re learning in our Academy, you’ll be working in a real salon, with real clients, always developing your skills and techniques.

You’ll be completing a number of different units over a period of 15 months,each contributing towards the latest City & Guilds NVQ qualification and other required components to pass your apprenticeship programme. Some are mandatory, whilst others you’ll get choose your preference and build your experience exactly how you’d like. Our expert assessors can guide you through your options and help you decide.

We’ll even help you find the perfect salon in your area, if you don’t have one in mind already. We’ll be with you every step of the way to give you all the support,information, advice, and guidance you need in achieving your goals and succeeding in this industry.

Before you apply for an apprenticeship in hairdressing be sure to check you are suitable first. If you’re not eligible, we have a number of other exciting courses available.

When you’ve successfully applied to join us as an apprentice, we’ll invite you to a course induction, where you’ll be able to confirm your commitment to the training programme, find out your start date and make sure you have everything in order to begin.

You’ll also need to purchase a training kit from us, so you have all the tools you need to learn effectively at The Terence Paul Academy. You will provide your own models, as this is ideal way to start building your own future clientele.

Are you eligible?

In order to join us on a hairdressing apprenticeship, you must first check your eligibility, as there are a number of restrictions on who can apply. You should be:

  • Between 16-to-23
  • No longer in, or about to leave, full time education
  • Permitted to work in England
  • Able to work in a team
  • Have good communication skills
  • Be committed to learning

Any previous hairdressing experience, in a Saturday job for example, may be beneficial, but it isn’t necessary.

We don’t require any specific grades are qualifications to join us on an apprenticeship, but if you do not have a grade C or above in Maths and English, you will need to study for the Functional Skills Test in these subjects. But don’t worry, we provide 1-to-1 support from a specialist tutor, utilising real life scenarios to help you achieve this.

When you’re ready to begin your hairdressing apprenticeship with us, we’ll invite you down to one of our training academy to meet with a dedicated recruitment consultant, who will help you with all the information, advice and guidance that you need.

They will be able to go over all the details of your course to make sure you understand everything, and answer any specific questions that you may have about learning and training with us.

Once you’re happy with everything, we’ll get to work straight away to help you find the ideal salon for your apprenticeship.
